BETSY MARS is a prize-winning poet, photographer, small publisher, and an editor at Gyroscope Review. Born in Connecticut, she moved several times as a child, most significantly spending two years of her early childhood in Brazil. This experience seeded her love for languages and sensitivity to cultural and economic differences. She works as a substitute teacher, manuscript editor, and cat servant, while maintaining her 1000 day + streak on Duolingo. In 2019 she was a winner in Alexandria Quarterly’s first line contest series, and has been a semi-finalist in both the Poetry Super Highway and the Jack Grapes contests.  She is the author of Alinea and In the Muddle of the Night, which was co-authored with Alan Walowitz. She collaborates with artist Judith Christensen, most recently on an installation entitled Mapping Our Future Selves which is part of an ongoing exploration of memory, identity, home, and family.
