the 2nd annual Bay to Ocean Writing Contest
Fiction, Nonfiction and Poetry
Entry deadline: Dec. 1, 2010

Sponsored by the Eastern Shore Writers' Association

The Bay to Ocean Writing Contest is organized by the Eastern Shore Writers' Association (ESWA) to honor first-rate writing in three categories--short fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. Co-sponsors are ESWA and  the Delmarva Quarterly magazine.  Winners will be announced in February 2010.  Details of how to enter the contest are provided below. 





Submission Deadline: Dec. 1, 2009
All entries must be received by December 1, 2009.  Entries must be submitted electronically only, by e-mail attachment as a Word document, to this e-mail address: BTOCONTEST@GMAIL.com.

Submission/Reading Fees
A processing fee will be charged for each entry--$5 for poems, and $10 for each work of fiction or nonfiction. Checks should be made out to the Eastern Shore Writers' Association, clearly marked "writing contest," and mailed to "Writing Contest, P.O. Box 544, St. Michaels, MD 21663." Entries, which must be submitted separately from payment, will not be eligible for review until the processing fee is received by ESWA.

Guidelines
Only original, unpublished work will be accepted. The length of work allowed will be 1,500 words for short fiction and creative nonfiction, and up to 40 lines for each poem. All entries must be original and not submitted elsewhere.  Each entry must contain the author's name, phone number and mailing address. Each entry must also contain a word count,
date and category name at the top--FICTION, NONFICTION or POETRY.


Judges

There will be one primary judge in each category.  For 2009, the judges will be:

Short Fiction: Kate Blackwell is an award-winning writer and instructor. Her collection of short stories, You Won't Rember This,was published in 2007 by Southern Methodist University Press. Kate’s stories have appeared in numerous literary journals, and she was selected as a featured writer in The Delmarva Review. She has taught writing in the Washington, D.C. area for fourteen years, at The Writer’s Center, in Bethesda, MD, and other venues. She has been a fellow at the McDowell Writers’ Colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and was a Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. She graduated from Wellesley College and earned a MA in English Literature from University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill. She has a home in Neavitt, MD. Website: www.kateblackwell.com 

 
Nonfiction:  Sheila F. Buckmaster has edited nonfiction for more than three decades. She is currently National Geographic Traveler editor at large and has been a staffer at the National Geographic Society since 1995. Buckmaster originated the “Stay List” hotel rankings for Traveler and has worked with many of the top writers in the travel field. She was the founding editor of World’s Fare: Food, Wine, and Wanderings, a package of stories and photographs syndicated internationally by the Los Angeles Times. She also started Side Streets of the World and Wine Wine Folio, travel and food & wine publications. Closer to home, she edited a book about Eastern Shore painter Kevin Fitzgerald. She lives in Easton, Maryland. 

  
Poetry: Award-winning poet Anne Colwell is an associate professor of English, University of Delaware. Her work has appeared in The Delmarva Review, Midwest Quarterly Review, The Alsop Review, Southern Poetry Review, Dominion Review, Atlanta Review, California Quarterly, Octavo and Eclectic Literary Forum. Eve Shelnutt's anthology, The Writer’s Room, has a chapter on her poems in it entitled “Discovering the Voices of Biblical Women.” Her manuscript, “Believing Their Shadows,” was a finalist for the Brittingham Prize at the University of Wisconsin, the Anhinga Prize, the New Issues Poetry Prize, and the Quarterly Review of Literature (QRL) Poetry Series. Her book Inscrutable Houses: Metaphors of the Body in the Poems of Elizabeth Bishop was published by the University of Alabama Press. She lives in Milton, Delaware.

Winners
First-place winners in each category will receive $100 and free admission to the 13th annual Bay to Ocean Writers Conference on February 20, 2010.  The wining prose and poetry also will be considered for publication in Delmarva Quarterly. Winners will be announced at the Bay to Ocean Writers Conference.

Terms & Conditions
The Bay to Ocean Writing Contest is open to all writers.

ESWA, the organizer, reserves the right to disqualify any entry that does not adhere to the contest guidelines.
